He may be a newcomer to Vijfhuizen, but Rob van Haaster has become an integral part of this Ringvaart village – and not just because of his impressive bulb-growing company on Spieringweg or his involvement with local football club DSOV. After all, he played there himself and is now mainly busy with sponsorship. This role suits him well, because he certainly has a way with words as well as a strong network.

Many years ago, this scion of a bulb-growing family, born in De Zilk, settled in the polder because he wanted to grow different varieties from his father. It took many years before the turned-over polder soil was sufficiently well mixed with the underlying dune and sea sand. Only then was it good enough to grow various tulip varieties such as Banja Luka, Crystal Star and Oranje Emperor. He also grows hyacinth and narcissus bulbs and, increasingly, cut hyacinths. There are major plans to expand that further – in a literal sense too – on Spieringweg.
In this episode of PassiePraat, we hear the story of a passionate agricultural entrepreneur; about his bulbs, about fields nearby and far away, about the family feeling of working with his brother and children in the business; and about farming, sometimes against the wind.

PassiePraat wordt op zondag tussen 13.00 en 14.00 uur herhaald op MeerRadio.
